Knowing When to ASK FOR Additional Guidance

This page is to help serve you in understanding whether you may need additional professional help in the area of your life that you are seeking to changed. It is important to understand that for some goals it’s vital to get additional professional aid and that coaching may not always hold all the answers. Although this page focuses on the comparison between a coach and counselor, it should be noted that ‘additional aid’ could mean a dietician, doctor, personal trainer, etc.  After reading the examples below, if you still are not sure whether or not coaching is the right next step for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me below!

Coach vs Counselor

Coach

Counselor

Coach

  • Coaches work with clients on current obstacles and other challenges. A coach’s main job is to help clients take results-oriented action, to move from the stuck in their lives so they’re more empowered and liberated.
  • Coaches listen, empower through suggestion and support, and hold clients accountable when action steps are made.
  • Coaches can help you navigate difficult relationships through understanding and communication tools.
  • Coaches see self-sabotage and negative thoughts and provide skills to interrupt patterns and transform them into positive and productive actions.

Both

Counselor

Coach

  • Both see the value in understanding your past, present, and the possibilities for your future.
  • Both help their clients/patients,  just in different ways.
  • Both can direct you to where your next step might be.
  • Both are able to see you  simultaneously and work together in bettering your well-being, life, and future.

Counselor

Counselor

Counselor

  • Counselors help their patients work through and resolve mental health, struggles, and past traumas.
  • Counselors analyze, diagnose, and/or prescribe treatment for their patients.
  • Counselors are there to get you out of  harmful relationships and abusive (physical or emotional) situations that need immediate attention.
  • Counselors know how to navigate a variety of addictions (alcohol, drug, porn, shopping, etc.) and self-mutilation issues (cutting, eating disorder, etc).
